Going The Distance

There aren't many Division I schools in the country where football players can do foreign study during the school year and still have their summer to train for the upcoming season. Thanks to its quarter system Dartmouth is one of the rare ones.

Big Green players can be "on" in the fall for their season, and "on" for spring football but take the winter term abroad.

Australia and New Zealand have been popular destinations for Dartmouth football players in recent years (video) but that's not all. In addition to running back Vito Penza enjoying his winter in Italy (photo) and others in distant lands, quarterback Jack Heneghan was in London and offensive lineman Matt Kaskey in Toulouse in the south of France.

The pair met up in Paris:

Joining Flo Orimolade, Charlie Miller, longsnapper Graydon Peterson and other Dartmouth pro hopefuls in Thursday's Pro Day in Hanover according to a story in the Concord Monitor will be University of New Hampshire offensive lineman Andrew Lauderdale, safety DeAndrade, running back Dalton Crossan and tight end Jordan Powell.
Speaking of former UNH players, Alexander Morrill, a 6-foot-2, 304-pound offensive lineman from nearby Lebanon, will be hiking the Appalachian Trail this summer. (LINK) The AT will take him directly past the south end zone of Memorial Field, past the Hanover Co-Op and Dartmouth softball field, and eventually within a long spiral of the World Headquarters of BGA here on Moose Mountain.
And as long as the subject is long-distance hiking . . .

That Certain Dartmouth '14 who grew up at the BGA World Headquarters, will take time off from her responsibilities with the National Park Service beginning in late spring to hike the 2,659-mile Pacific Crest Trail along the spine of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges from Mexico to Canada. After spending the fall driving a snow coach out of Old Faithful she has resumed her duties as an educational ranger at park headquarters in Mammoth Hot Springs and will be there until heading out on the PCT. In case you are wondering, she majored in earth science at Dartmouth with a minor in education.
